When in the fall of 2020 the Harford County Public Library contemplated the establishment of a local history page, they were serendipitously contacted by local historians and authors Jack L. Shagena, Jr. and Henry C. Peden, Jr. who offered their extensive research material. This included about 20 books that collectively represent a modern history of the county along with a collection of images that included postcards, photographs, and maps. The library initiated a search for a software program that could house this collection and also provide an easy way for users to search for information about a particular subject. As a result of this collaboration, the Harford’s Heritage Special Collection launched in April 2022.

Documents in the Harford’s Heritage Books Collection and in the Historical Resources Collection are presented in the PDF format and each can be downloaded and viewed with a PDF app such as Adobe Acrobat. The Canning Labels, Portraits, and Postcards are in the JPG format and can be viewed as presented. In the Map Collection, however, both formats are used.
